Indifference to excess stimuli—
what urban dwellers do to get by.
I don’t pay attention to eyes locking on buses,
corners of mouths curling up in response.
I don’t pay attention to bands in backyards,
crowds gathering to listen.
I don’t pay attention to elbows bumping in theaters,
hands meeting in apology.
I don’t pay attention to flavor fusion on food trucks,
cultures coming together as one.
I don’t pay attention to perfumes filling elevators,
lungs expanding to take it in.
It’s almost too much to bear—
I can’t get enough of it.
