I can’t speak to your California
but I’ll sing for mine:
                Yosemite.

Magnificent stone,
tall.
        Too short a word
         for these
         towering giants:
                          Royal.
         I don’t believe in rulers
                         But I bow to you.

Oh!
A gust of wind
through the valley,
My lungs too small to catch it all,
I leap
against the screeching air

I fall, clumsy, rolling amongst the grass
                                                                    I am child.

tangled hair
I will dance on your hilltops
I will kiss my best friend
           wide smile,
              here are my teeth
                for you
      the valley so wide
      I am big and small.
