Worm, cocoon, butterfly
Criminal, alien, immigrant

Tending the soil
Farm, fold, farm, fold, farm, fold
Back folds like a worm’s toil
¿I steal your jobs?
¿Do you want to pluck maíz?
¿Do you want to import agucate?

¿Slither through the borderlands
while being aimed at by predatory
beaks?
¿Do you want your blood en las uvas?
¿How can I steal your jobs if I’m not allowed to apply?
¿Do you think about the risk I’m taking?
I breathe—
and I
become
a criminal

Worm,
cocoon,
butterfly
criminal
alien,
immigrant

Wrapping myself under documentation
Missing papers, missing identification
I don’t have identity, I’m not a human being
Mi papá y yo fuimos separados por fronteras
Lo quiería ver ya que me convirtiera en mariposa
Mi hermana se fue con él y ya no puede regresar
Ella lo miró morir; yo me quedé aquí en su funeral
Extraño a mi país, extraño a mi familia
Me duele mucho no ser mariposa.

Worm, cocoon—
Drones don’t need papers to fly, ¿why do I?
Worm, cocoon—
Motherfuckers have been fighting for land
Worm, cocoon,—
Mother Earth belongs to no man
Worm, cocoon,—
Bombs, fucking bombs and borderlands
Moon protects Her from meteorites
but can’t protect Her from your hands
Somehow I’m the alien, I’m the criminal
My ancestors and I have given our backs to this land
and you fold Her in half
¡Immigrant, immigrant, fucking immigrant!
¡That slur blows me apart!
¡It keeps my family apart!
¡It rips my wings apart!
When all I want is to be a
Monarch Butterfly.
